Our Commitment to the Environment

Our Commitment to the EnvironmentRepublic Paper is committed to protecting our natural resources and being socially responsible by continuously striving to find innovative ways to use less energy, less water, lower fiber loss and create less waste to produce the highest quality gypsum paper liner available.

The use of 100% recycled fiber to produce our paper funnels paper from the waste stream and landfill into products used to create a safe and more environmentally friendly living space in homes and office buildings.

Republic Paper adheres to all local, state, and federal environmental regulations and conducts required testing, monitoring and reporting.

Republic has worked with the local school systems to educate students on the principles of reduce, reuse, recycle and has set up collection systems to allow students to participate in the paper recycling effort.

Republic Recycling Process

  • Recycled Content:

Republic’s paper is produced with 100% recycled fiber containing both post and pre-consumer fiber.

  • Primary Raw Materials:

Recycled fiber sources include old cardboard containers (OCC), unprinted newspapers and lighly printed office paper and forms.

Environmental Stewardship

RecyclingLandfill Savings:

  • About 3 cubic yards of landfill space are saved for every ton of paper recovered and reused. Republic uses 1,000 tons per day or a savings of about 3,000 cubic yards of landfill space.

Water Reuse:

  • Paper is produced with 1 pound of fiber and 99 pounds of water. Republic continuously strives to reduce the freshwater needed by reusing water in many areas of the production process and implementing water conservation projects that reduce freshwater consumption by 15% by cleaning and keeping water in the process.
  • All water that is not evaporated though the drying process or reused is treated via a several stage treatment plant prior to sending water to the city of Lawton for final processing.

Transportation:

  • Paper is shipped using the most efficient mode, including rail which saves on fossil fuel.
  • All efforts are made to purchase raw materials from sources closest to our operation to limit the amount of cost and energy required to transport the recycled fiber.

Air Emissions:

  • Republic’s paper manufacturing process meets all city, state and federal regulations relating to air emissions and quality.

Energy:

  • Republic converted to LED lighting throughout mill. This reduced electricity usage for lighting by 65%, which annually saved enough energy to power about 175 homes for a year.
  • Republic also worked to recover heat, recycle water, and improve inefficiencies so that natural gas usage has been cut by 33% in the last 10 years.
  • Operators run equipment at precisely controlled speeds due to the installation of numerous variable frequency drives that greatly reduce wasted energy.

Community Recycling

School Programs:

  • Republic Paperboard has worked with 39 different school sites and the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge to set up recycling containers for paper collection.
  • The program is completing its ninth year and a total of 698 tons of paper have been recycled by children from elementary school through high school.

On-site Collection:

  • A collection container is staged outside our facility for employees and the public at large to drop off fiber to be recycled. It is available 24 hours a day.
